Catching the feeling.
Sunday, January 12, 2025.
This past week I began mood boards again. Call them what you will—mood boards, vibration boards, vision boards—different names have resonated with me in different seasons of life.
The timing is January. How very cliche of me to be vision-boarding. And while potentially very much in the realm of partaking in the new year, new you nonsense, it couldn’t be further from the truth. But alas, here we are.
As timing would have it, last week I returned to another city as part of my newly nomadic journey. Mexico City (CDMX). A story for another time (perhaps), but CDMX and I have truly found redemption and every time I now place my feet on the soil here, I realize how grounded I feel, how inspired I feel, how expansive the entirety of my reality suddenly feels.
Maybe it’s the buzz of being one of the world’s mega cities. Maybe it’s the magic of the land. Maybe it’s the incredible green spaces and inner city parks and forests that breathe life into everything everywhere. Maybe it’s the fact that I adamantly, and with my whole heart, wrote a new story about me and CDMX. Maybe it’s all of the above. Nevertheless, I arrived back here and newfound inspiration began to strike again. And I wanted to catch the feeling.
What does this expansion look and feel like? When I ask myself this question I recognize that it feels beautiful. Beauty opens my heart—so wide.
So when I contemplated this question: what’s one thing I can do to keep bringing the beauty to the forefront? It was literally to place the beauty in front of me. Cue: vision boards.
In that contemplation, another question arose. This one, which by the way, has been living rent-free in my heart & mind for the last year: “How well can you execute?”
How well can you execute?
How well can you execute?
Like a broken record.
I have danced an inner dance with this question most of my life. Certainly, I’m not alone. Endless ideas. Expansive imagination. More strings of words than I often know what to do with. Programs upon programs to share with the world. The truth is, it’s very simple. Can I bring inspired action to these ideas? Can I bring something, anything, to completion? Do I really need to wait for some sort of unwavering strike of inspiration to hit? Or can I execute one small micro step now? And repeat it. Do it again and again and again.
The next step doesn’t need to be a quantum leap. For the love of all things holy, let’s stop normalizing that.
However, if you can catch the feeling. And you can complete one thing (one small thing), today. And then repeat—again and again, until, eventually, quantum leaping is inevitable. If that’s even of interest to you.
My point being, while there are forever forces at work which are greater than the confines of our limited human imagination, and that God will always have a grander plan, we still get to create. We still get to catch the feeling. We still get to play and expand our imaginations. We still have the freewill to choose a new state of being.
That may look different for you than it does for me. And it will certainly vary from life season to life season. But what makes the execution easier is consistency. Tiny steps on repeat until they become a habit. This is anything but revolutionary. And it may look very different today then it did last year or even yesterday.
When inspiration began rolling in hot, I remembered how much joy I receive from sharing beauty on my Instagram again. The online coaches can say what they will, and sure, there is truth to sharing more of your own content and creating more than consuming. However, if you find yourself in a lull where your work feels as empty as the crickets when you share nothing at all, give yourself permission to play. To catch the feeling. To share the beauty. To saturate yourself in the sweetness.
Make your vision boards. And also, execute one small thing today.
Catch the feeling. And also, execute one small thing today.
Yes, for those of us in a Northern Hemisphere season of deep winter, this isn’t the time to hit the ground running. However, the world is still turning, and we still get to feel joy in the things that are to be done anyway. Even while replenishing.
This is actually an even more powerful activity when you’re in rest mode. Maybe you make it part of your evening routine. Take 5 minutes to save a dozen beautiful Pins on Pinterest. Let the sensation of what feels beautiful shift your state, and saturate your being before you drop into a deep sleep.
After all…
